Following the successful conduct of Two Princes & Us concert of Daniel Padilla, Erik Santos and comedienne Kakai Bautista last month, another big event is set to be held in the City of Koronadal this April. 

This time, with "The Pusong Bato Sensation" Aimee Torres and rap superstar Gloc-9  in a concert brought to us by KCC Department Store.

Trivia: Population of South Cotabato

The Province of South Cotabato is a melting pot of people coming from different regions and tribes. According to the 2010 census, South Cotabato has a population of 827, 200 people and 411, 246 registered voters during the May 2010 elections but reports said that for the May 2013 elections registered voters in South Cotabato has already increased to 435,495 people that means the total population of South Cotabato has also increased. 

Here is a table showing the population of the 10 towns of South Cotabato  and the City of Koronadal still using the figures from the 2010 census. We will update this post as soon as the latest data is released by the National Statistics Office.

Organized by the Philippine Coalition Against Tuberculosis (PhilCAT) the World TB Day 2013 Music Video Contest intends to expand the reach of the coalition’s TB advocacy efforts to the community through the social media. A total of 15 entries were submitted and uploaded on Youtube by different PhilCAT member groups & Local Government Units (LGUs).

The music video entry from South Cotabato was produced by South Cotabato IDO.

SOCOTECO-1 Brownout Schedule: 3-hour Power Interruption on Sunday (April 7,2013)

On Sunday expect a brownout that will last up to 3 hours as announced recently by SOCOTECO-1. The power outage is for the company to facilitate installation of post insulators for the new 69 kV line to supply the San Roque Substation in Koronadal City, it will run from 8am- 11am, April 7, 2013 and will affect the entire coverage area of SOCOTECO-1.

Socoteco-I covers the municipalities of Tantangan, Banga, Norala, Surallah, T’boli, Sto. Nino and Lake Sebu in South Cotabato, Lutayan town in Sultan Kudarat and the City of Koronadal.

And for summer 2013,  a group of independent mountaineers from South Cotabato is organizing an outreach climb to Lake Holon on May 18-19, 2013. This is the best time for a Lake Holon Adventure. The outreach climb called Takladtamig Seis is open to everyone. 


Banga Resorts - Aside from being known for its corn husk industry and as the top producer of corn in South Cotabato, the town of Banga is also known for its many resorts. There are about 15 resorts to choose from this summer  in the municipality of Banga and a number of these resorts are destinations in their own right. Fortune Field Resort in Crossing Kipot and Blue Haven Resort & Durian Park are only two of the most recommended.

Paraiso Verde Resort & Water Park - the only world class resort in the region Paraiso Verde Resort and Water Park is definitely a must go-to place this summer. Opened to the public 2 years ago, Paraiso Verde Resort & Water Park has four main attractions that includes the 12.5 X 25 meter Freestyle Swim Pool, Adventura River Rapids, Wiggles Kiddie Pool and the Moby Wave Pool which is said to be the largest wave pool in all of Mindanao that also features a giant water bucket.

Coffee Industrial Tour & Lagbasan Cave in Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat

SouthCotabato.Org was one of the five members of the SOCCSKSARGEN Bloggers who joined the Familiarization Tour and Coffee Industrial Tour organized by Department of Trade  and Industry (DTI) -Sultan Kudarat in cooperation with Provincial Tourism Office of Sultan Kudarat Province last April 9-10, 2013 in the municipality of Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat.

Included during the tour was a visit to the production center of Neo Country Crafts located in Brgy. Chua, Bagumbayan, Sultan Kudarat. Neo Country Crafts produces top quality bags, hats and other souvenir items all made from abaca fibers. And a visit  to a coffee nursery and the coffee roasting and processing area of BrownCup, the producer of Kulaman Coffee.

According to DTI-Sultan Kudarat provincial director Nelly Dillera the Province of Sultan Kudarat is now the biggest coffee producer in the Philippines and the town of Senator Ninoy Aquino is on top in terms of coffee production in the entire province.

Participants of the tour also visited Lagbasan Cave in Barangay Kuden and despite the long travel from the town center, everyone were all amazed by the unique formations of stalactites, stalagmites and helictites found inside the cave.

Upper Valley Community Hospital nears completion

Construction of the Upper Valley Community Hospital located in Brgy. Dajay in Surallah is now nearing completion.

As shown in the following photos taken yesterday (April 12, 2013), interior works is on full blast while the main building's exteriors are almost done .






In a report published at the official website of South Cotabato, the Upper Valley Community Hospital which is  an extension facility of the South Cotabato Provincial Hospital (SCPH) will  begin operation by the second half of the year and will mainly cater to the towns of Lake Sebu, Sto.Niño, T'boli, Banga and Surallah.





Upper Valley Community Hospital will initially start with 40 beds and an estimated budget of P30 million for personnel, maintenance and other operating expenses for its first year of operation.
The report also said that South Cotabato Governor Arthur Y. Pingoy, Jr. is pushing for the Upper Valley Community Hospital to become a regional-level hospital considering the strategic location and the extensive land area.

Philippine Science High School SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus in Koronadal City

Construction of the 12th campus of Philippine Science High School system located in Brgy. Paraiso, City of Koronadal continues as shown in the latest pictures taken yesterday April 14, 2013.
The Philippine Science High School SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus (PSHS -SRC) lies in a 4.5 hectares of land donated by the provincial government of South Cotabato where the Philippine National Halal Laboratory and Science Center of DOST-12 is also under construction.
Closer shots show roofing are in progress in two of the buildings. Workers are also seen doing concrete works in another building. Internal works and finishing are also on going at the main academic building (with blue roofing) with seven rooms.

Philippine Science High School SOCCSKSARGEN Region Campus is scheduled to open this coming June 2013 with only three classes of freshmen students.  Each class will only have 30 students. 

Once construction is completed PSHS-SRC will feature modern and complete school facilities that includes school buildings, laboratories, dormitory, canteen and sports facilities.

As shown, construction of the 4-storey Benlyn Hotel is now slowly moving into the final stages, they are now working on the interiors as well as finishing touches on the exteriors.

South Cotabato public school receive P100,000 from Google

Smiles were all around the school campus of Lake Sebu Central Elementary School when we arrived past 11:00 o'clock in the morning last Saturday, April 20, 2013 to finally award the P100,000 from Google. 

The amount is part of the prize for being the top mapper or mapper with the most number of edits/contributions in the Google Map Your Town Competition held last year.

We were welcomed by members of the faculty, parents and the school's PTA officials and some pupils dressed in T'boli traditional costumes.

I studied at Lake Sebu Central ES for only 1 year (Grade 2), but it has become close to my heart and continued to become part of my life and our family. 

My aunt who was my teacher during that year and has supported me with my studies during high school and college is still serving the school for more than 30 years now, the location of the school, the fact that most of the pupils and students there belong to poor families and many of the students were from the T'boli tribe which is also close to my heart, were some of the reasons why Lake Sebu Central Elementary School was my public school of choice to receive the P100,000 from Google Map Your Town Competition. 

It's not easy to put places on the map, please use the money well.


In their messages Aileen Apolo-de Jesus, Head of Outreach - Google South East Asia, Chelle Gray, Google Developers Group Philippines Community Manager and Avel Manansala, Head of SOCCSKSARGEN Bloggers and Community Manager of Google Business Group Gensan congratulated the whole Lake Sebu Central ES community for being chosen to receive the P100,000 and expressed hopes that the money will be used for projects within the school to benefit the students and pupils of Lake Sebu Central ES, same was promised to us by Mrs. Ivy Mañalac, the school principal during her acceptance speech.

Google Map-Your-Precinct South Cotabato

Responding to the call of Google Philippines for volunteers to contribute to its Map-Your-Precinct 2013 Project, the South Cotabato Google Map Makers an informal group of volunteer mappers successfully conducted the Map-Your-Precinct South Cotabato yesterday April 27, 2013. 
Held at Basilio's Pasta & Resto in the City of Koronadal, it was attended by 10 volunteers mappers from all over South Cotabato.
The Map-You-Precinct 2013 is a project of Google which aims to help Filipino voters easily locate the location of their voting precincts using the specially designed precinct finder website FindYourPrecinct.Ph which uses Google Maps.
The attendees during the Map-Your-Precinct South Cotabato are the following : IT students from NDMU Sam Keeley Ong, Karl Guevarra & Gelo Villanueva, bloggers Raiza Mae Boldios and Louie Pacardo, businessman Ruel Ambat, IT instructor Chucky Fernandez, NDMU Professor Francis Cornejo Claudio and SouthCotabato.Org owner Reynard Navarro.

Most Spoken Dialect in South Cotabato

South Cotabato is a melting pot of people coming from different regions and tribes. There are over 20 different dialects spoken in the province and most of the South Cotabateños are multilingual, able to communicate in Hiligaynon and/or Cebuano, as well as in both Tagalog and English. Other languages spoken are Ilocano and Maguindanao. The indigenous tribes like the T'boli's and B'laan, in addition, use their own tribal dialects.

Based on reports from the NSO, Hiligaynon tops the list as the most spoken dialect in South Cotabato, being the mother tongue of 52.4% of the household. Cebuano ranks second, and T'boli third.

Ilonggos from Panay and Negros in the Visayas settled in the municipalities of Norala, Banga, Surallah, Sto. Niño and the City of Koronadal. On the other hand, people from the Ilocano speaking regions of Luzon settled in Tampakan, Tantangan and Tupi, and the Ilocano language may still be heard spoken in these towns. The Visayan language, Cebuano is also the main dialect in the municipalities of Polomolok and Tupi (along with Ilonggo and Tagalog). Both towns are near to Cebuano-speaking General Santos City.


The Maguindanao tribe is the major Muslim Filipino tribe in South Cotabato. Other tribes are the T'boli and B'laan tribes in the municipalities of Lake Sebu and T'boli .

What to buy?
T'boli dolls. Made with indigenous materials, price ranges from P500 - P1,000 each.
Colorful bead necklaces, bracelets, ID holders, etc. T'boli women  in Lake Sebu are engaged in bead making, one of their traditional arts passed down from mothers to daughters and has become one of their livelihood.
Bags, modified T'boli attires, coin purses, T'nalak fabric, and other T'nalak inspired items. T'nalak  is an indigenous fabric from abaca that was made through a centuries-old process by T'boli women of  South Cotabato. T'nalak is also the ultimate cultural emblem of the province.
Brass wares and wood carvings.  Using woods and other indigenous materials, T'boli men produces indigenous musical instruments for souvenirs and other wooden items with indigenous designs. The T'boli's are also master brass casters, as can be seen in their produce of brass belts, bells, bracelets, anklets,etc.

T’boli Museum
Go to Lake Sebu's T'boli museum and be an spectator in learning about the culture of the T’boli people. Tourists may also purchase souvenir items here, but offers only smaller quantities of souvenir items compared with other privately owned souvenir shops. 
T'nalak Cloth.
Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan Center
Located at at Sitio Tukolefa, Lamdalag, Lake Sebu, it is better known as Lang Dulay's training center where one can find genuine T'nalak fabric souvenir from the Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan awardee and master dream weaver of the T'boli's, Be' Lang Dulay. Gawad Manlilikha ng Bayan Center is about 15 minutes away from Poblacion, Lake Sebu.
